"Marco Zanuso's 'Regent': A Timeless Piece of 1960s Italian Design"

The Regent collection, designed by Marco Zanuso for Arflex in the 1960s, is a very unique and interesting design that is still relatively unknown to the general public and those interested in Italian Mid Century design. However, it has been popping up in house projects of many world renowned interior designers. Since it was manufactured in the 1960s, it is rare to get ahold of, but designers have been discovering this collection and successfully incorporating it into their contemporary projects. For example, a couple of Zanuso Regent chairs were included in the Alexander Design Build project Bonsall Home, which was featured in Vogue Living and included in the limited edition book World’s Finest Homes by Beta Plus Publishing. Additionally, a Regent Chair was used in a project by Studio Mellone. A pair of Zanuso Regent chairs can be worth up to 25,000$.

Just when you thought you had seen it all in the world of mid-century design, you may be in for a surprise. A rare set of one Zanuso Regent sofa and one lounge chair, re-upholstered with a silky high grade aniline Italian leather in a taupe color, is now available to view in an exclusive loft gallery.

This set is the perfect addition to any modern, stylish home. The mid-century design is a timeless classic, and the luxurious Italian leather adds a touch of sophistication. The taupe color is sure to complement any existing decor.

Marco Zanuso revolutionized Italian Design by introducing a fresh and innovative approach to living, products, and materials. With his 1939 Architecture degree from the Polytechnic University of Milan, he opened his design firm in Milan in 1945, and later became editor of design magazines Domus and Casabella. He was among the first to experiment with new materials such as foam and latex, and his exceptional furniture pieces earned him several design awards, such as the Lady Chair, the 1949 Antropus chair, and the 1951 Sleep-o-matic sofa. His unique designs pushed the boundaries of traditional and classic concepts, showcasing the potential of research and experimental study.

In 1957, the collaboration between Marco Zanuso and German designer Richard Sapper resulted in the successful K4999 children stackable chair for Kartell. Made of lightweight, non-reinforced plastic, the piece helped to revolutionize the use of plastic as a material for furniture and home accessories. This was just the beginning of Zanuso and Sapper's highly successful design partnership. The two later went on to create a series of televisions, radios and the iconic 'Grillo' telephone for Siemens (1966), one of the first phones to have the dial and ear system in one unit. Zanuso was dedicated to creating products for the home and living that were functional, accessible and affordable. His other works include the Lambda Chair for Gavina and the Martingala Chair for Arflex.

This 1960 Zanuso Regent sofa and chair set is a rare and sought-after collector's item that has been meticulously reupholstered with the finest materials. Its three-seat cushions feature beautiful button-tufting and its legs are composed of enameled steel and wooden round feet. Upon request, we can provide images of the pre-restoration, the original ad from the period, and documentation of the purchase. The leather is luxurious, smooth, and soft aniline leather in a warm beige color, and the feet are composed of black-painted metal and a shaped wood base.
